Flee
An animated documentary about Amin, a man recounting his secret past when he fled from Afghanistan to Denmark.
Embraces novel storytelling techniques as an aid rather than as a gimmick. We get to hear the subject of the story tell it as it happened while watching it all come to life in animation. It captures a tone that live-action reconstruction or archive footage would have missed, and breaks new ground in the genre.
It’s not the easiest watch and yet it’s important to hear stories like this. The realities of war and the realities of coming to Europe as a refugee are often too easy to shy away from. Perhaps hearing one person’s story instead of seeing thousands of people in the news makes it more accessible.
An emotional, moving, honest, novel, sobering documentary. A must-see.
