Sasquatch Sunset
Follows a group of Sasquatches (Jesse Eisenberg, Riley Keough in very furry suits) as they go about their day to day life.
Well I went in blind to this one and wasn’t expecting this to be a silent film, my second one in recent weeks after Hundreds of Beavers1. It really is people dressed in sasquatch costumes as they eat, shit fuck and have babies. One of them is starting to count beyond the number five.
The first twenty minutes or so try to shock you into laughing (or leaving), and it’s quite amusing but I’d quickly had enough and was glad when the tone changed allowing the film to begin exploring different themes through its off-beat concept.
It does hit upon moments of some sort of profundity in all the chaos. The lovely cinematography and super chill soundtrack give the film a contemplative tone that sits quite amusingly alongside some giant furries flinging shite at each other.
Towards the end this gets a bit forced and a pretty ham fisted message floats to the top, leaving a bad taste in your mouth.
This really could have been a hard one to sit through but they just about pull it off, and I have to give a lot of points for originality and effort. But you can’t win them all and sadly this is not one I’ll be coming back to in a hurry.
