The Sheffield Pork Sandwich Tour: The Village Store
Happy New Year pork sandwich fans. We’re back with a bang in 2025, my New Year’s resolution is to eat one of these every single day.
We’re out in Stannington today, which sits very high up on the ridge between the beautiful Rivelin and Loxley valleys. If you look one way it’s the city, the other way it’s the Peak District. It was a lovely drive out there on a crisp winter’s day.
At the top of the hill there’s The Village Store, the sort of place that sells everything - including pork sandwiches at their counter at the back.
Pork aficionados will recognise the logo from Lily’s1 over in Hillsborough, and that’s where The Village Store gets their bread from.
That’s always a good sign because Lily’s breadcakes are top-tier.
The sandwich itself is also up there with the best. The pork is sliced up in the trad style, slightly thicker than Béres2 but not super chunky.
You get asked if you want butter or dripping which is a nice touch, and for science if I get given the choice I always get dripping. That also gives it a bit of a Béres quality.
As you can see they are really generous with the filling, and the stuffing in particular was excellent.
The meat really stands out here, succulent and flavoursome without being too greasy - you could happily enjoy this without the stuffing, crackling or apple sauce if you were a bit dull.
At £4.50 for a regular size (I always order the smallest available) it’s on the high-side of what we’ve been paying around here, but frankly it doesn’t feel expensive for what is the gastronomic equivalent of a big warm hug on a cold winter’s day.
Price: £4.50
