Time to change to a static blog generator. Fun for all the family!
I was beginning to find Wordpress a little heavy handed. It’s been good to me all this time, but it’s just so bloated with features I’ll never use. Time to take advantage of some server downtime to make a change. Fortunately, despite my server being down, github kindly provide a free hosting service for static sites such as mine. It’ll do for now.
The set up, as with anything I have no idea about, is slow. The sites don’t look as good out of the box. I feel like I’m just starting to understand how this whole thing works, and what it can and cannot do.
Things I’ve picked up so far:
Typing into a text file is nicer that having a fancy editor. It’s rock solid.
I need to learn markdown. I think I’ve managed to get bullet points working.
Ditto with git. I’ve managed to get it working but I don’t feel like I fully understand the system.
If and when I move this site over to my own server, it’ll be a simple copy/paste job. No crazy database wrangling.
So far the positives outweigh the negatives for me. I want to keep the site simple, but I’ll be definitely tweaking the theme when I have time (and… ahem… the know-how).
