Léon: The Professional

Is life always this hard, or is it just when you’re a kid?

The ‘unlikely friendship’ scenario is a Hollywood favourite, but this outsider take on the idea from Luc Besson is a one-of-a-kind.

The screenplay builds a charming relationship between Jean Reno’s hitman and Natalie Portman’s almost-teenage girl then sets it to a backdrop of violence in the seedy underbelly of the city. Gary Oldman puts in a deranged, powerful performance as a corrupt DEA agent out to get the two of them.

Leon is a beautiful, tragic story about two lost souls with all the beats of a thriller to keep you on the edge of your seat. A modern classic.
