The Spy Who Dumped Me

Why are you using the turn signal? You’re literally telling them where we’re going.

Two friends (Mila Kunis, Kate McKinnon) get into trouble when they find out one of their (recently ex-) boyfriends is a spy. When he gets shot dead in front of them, he gives them a contact to find in Europe. They travel over the Atlantic to follow the lead.

This has its fair share of great location work, well staged action scenes and funny jokes. Kunis and McKinnon are great together and the buddy-comedy element here works well.

Unfortunately it doesn’t hang together. Every scene feels like a flimsy framework for gags, some of which work well but many of which are really laboured. Nothing funny happens that affects the outcome of the plot, leaving you feeling empty.

The Spy Who Dumped Me is far from bad, but it fires too many blanks to be truly great.
