Spider-Man Homecoming

Spidey’s back and this time he’s been roped into the Marvel Universe, which means he buddies up with Tony Stark and he’s allowed to make jokes about Captain America.

Michael Keaton plays a literal Birdman (Get it? Because of that other movie he did!) with a wing suit, but he’s just a guy trying to make a living. It’s sort of refreshing to see a villain who isn’t seeking world domination; although by the end his motives never really mattered.

This is the first time Spider-Man actually feels like a real kid. Maguire and Garfield both captured the awkwardness of the character but they never felt truly young. Tom Holland really sells the idea that’s he’s still just a child in a man’s clothes (or super-suit).

That’s the main selling point of a film which is otherwise much like every other Marvel effort. Shiny, self-referential and gently amusing with a dreary and loud final action sequence.
