Girls Trip

Girl, you can’t get no infection in your booty hole! It’s a booty hole!
18 November 2017

A group of old girlfriends re-unite to go on a bender in New Orleans.

In spite of its tired old format Girls Trip is funny enough to be worth your time. The interplay between the four leads (Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Tiffany Haddish) is natural, with some of the best comedy coming from their more subtle interactions. Plus, Lee shoots it in a loose, almost carefree way, putting the audience right in the middle of the party.

It’s not all fun and games. Congratulations to Essence magazine on bagging one of the longest adverts in a movie since Google’s appearance in The Internship. Also, Girls Trip could easily be 20 minutes shorter - the ending in particular is dud speech about magical friendship that happens in a conference centre. Fun times!

Nevertheless the film stands above other studio comedies of its ilk. At its worst it’s mildly annoying but at its best it’s up there with Bridesmaids.
