The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight is essentially a mob crime thriller that goes way off the rails. It’s about the flow of money and power through a corrupt system. Then The Joker shows up with an apparent motive to make everyone richer but the big twist is that he has no goal. He’s a pure agent of chaos.
This is what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. You truly are incorruptible, aren’t you?
More often than not superhero films fail when they try to be more than just popcorn munching entertainment, but Nolan’s vision for Batman works in part because he plays it so straight. It’s a slick film packed with a load of special effects but at its core it’s grounded in some version of reality.
The more I watch this film the more I realise two things:
- The tunnel chase scene is a mess and a load of stuff happens in there that makes no sense. It’s like they edited it together in the wrong order.
- That doesn’t matter because this is probably the only good superhero film ever made.
