Skyscraper

If you can’t fix it with duct tape… you ain’t using enough duct tape.

For whatever reason I find myself compelled to try to understand why Hollywood keeps trying to shove Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson in our faces. This time they’ve got him trying to save his family from a burning skyscraper.

He’s not the worst actor to ever grace the screen, but for whatever reason his name has become synonymous with a certain brand of bland and forgettable - albeit polished - films. Skyscraper doesn’t break from this trend at all, in fact it serves only to reinforce his place as Hollywood’s dullest muscle man.

There are a couple of original ideas in here that lead to some genuinely tense moments, but the stakes are constantly being lowered by lazy writing and cheap plot-hole fillers. Action thrillers always have to toy with the delicate balance of spectacle vs plausibility and here no one seems to have taken this into account.

A clumsy CGI riddled mess.
