A wealthy socialite high-schooler takes a new student under her wing to give her a makeover and make the newbie popular. Things start to go awry when she realises she has been neglecting her own romantic life.
Very very funny from start to finish, Alicia Silverstone in particular gives one of the best performances I’ve ever seen in a teen comedy.
The script subverts your expectations by setting up the protagonists as unlikeable, spoilt, privileged kids but quickly shows them to be real people with real wants and needs. Then it takes those goals seriously, never mocking its characters. You never laugh at people, just with them.
Yet another one I’m sorry I hadn’t seen sooner. A modern classic.
