An English professor deals with various bits of shit hitting the fan all at once.
A strange mix of cutesy romantic comedy, black comedy, farce, literature and soul searching. Wonder Boys is not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but its odd tone and meandering, eventful yet inconsequential plot make it easy to see why it failed to gain traction when it was released.
It’s a bit of a cult classic now, which is also easy to understand. A solid cast (Michael Douglas, Frances McDormand, Tobey Maguire, Katie Holmes, Robert Downey Jr.,) inhabits a world that feels real and well developed, even if little happens in it.
A funny, flawed, forgotten gem.
