Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

My name is Peter Parker. I was bitten by a radioactive spider, and for ten years I’ve been the one and only Spider-Man.

A young kid is bitten by a Spider, but struggles to come to terms with his powers. When a rift between dimensions opens, other Spider-men enter his world and help him out.

Outstanding technical creativity. It’s like watching the pages of a comic come alive, but without ever losing a firm grasp of cinematic action and storytelling. There’s nothing out there that looks or feels like this, and it’s clear that everyone involved went above and beyond to make Into the Spider-verse happen.

The film bounces along to hip-hop in the same way Jungle Book leverages its jazz soundtrack. They wind up the metronome at the start and it barely stops to take a breath until the end.

This is all backed by a funny, clever and gently subversive script. It uses self-awareness of the Spider-man franchise to add depth and a little wink to the audience while still taking itself very seriously. This lets it wind up to a heavy emotional punch that is well earned by the end.

A Spider-man animation with a terrible name is not something you might think would be worth your time. I’m here to tell you that not only is it worth a look, it is one of the best animations I have seen in years.

An exhilarating explosion of colour and chaos. This film pulses with life, and makes me feel happy to be alive myself.
