Roxanne

You went to bed with him awfully fast, a few frilly words and you’re counting ceilling tiles.

A man with a huge nose (Steve Martin) falls for a bright and beautiful woman (Daryl Hannah). She’s initially attracted to another guy (Rick Rossovich) so our protagonist helps him write letters to woo her.

A surprisingly clever adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac that gifts Steve Martin with a one-of-a-kind character who’s genuinely funny but also optimistic. It’s a miracle he doesn’t look like a grinning fool, but instead he’s charming and clever without being smug or mean spirited.

The dialogue gets a bit cloying and they could have given Daryl Hannah a bit more to chew on, but Roxanne strikes a unique tone that carefully steps between schmaltz and comedy without compromising either.
