I’ve seen this a few times now, but it was interesting to revisit it in light of having read the book1.
It’s remarkable how well they capture the tone of the book here. Hailee Steinfeld was picked after a huge amount of casting effort, and it pays off.
And yet the Coens still know when to wander off track to make for a better film. Stylistically they pretty much play it straight, and it works, showing that there’s still life in the Western as a genre if you know how to tell a story.
