Downton Abbey: A New Era

They better be warned: the British are coming.

Another addition to the series, this one set in the late 20s as Hollywood comes to Downton to make a film there.

Definitely one for the fans, this film is creaking under the weight of numerous characters and plot lines that are too much to follow for casual viewers. But then again, if you’re watching the second Downton Abbey film you probably are a fan.

Even with that taken into account though, A New Era really has its fingers in too many tepid and low-stakes pies. There’s a fish out of water comedy in France, a like for like remake of Singin’ in the Rain, a wedding, some medical drama, some marital drama, various romances… the list goes on. When they start having to wrap it all up it moves at a hilariously breakneck speed, almost as if they ran out of time and money.

At this point you’ll know if you want to watch this or not so I’ll shut up. It’s more of the same, for better or for worse.
