See How They Run

It’s a whodunit. You’ve seen one, you’ve seen ‘em all!
31 January 2024

When a film director (Adrien Brody) is killed during a production of The Mousetrap, a detective (Sam Rockwell) is sent in to catch the killer.

See How They Run poses as a stylish and witty whodunnit following in the footsteps of Knives Out but it soon becomes apparent that it is neither. It wants to subvert the genre but simply becomes a poor example of it.

Adrien Brody brings a lot to the film only to be woefully under served by the script and given little to do. I love Sam Rockwell but his English accent is terrible here and he’s kind of phoning it in.

Saoirse Ronan is very good, and somehow takes the bad writing and really runs with it. She’s cast as the comic relief, the green police officer who’s overly keen on taking notes and semi-clueless. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her do anything like this and it really worked. Through her performance you can maybe see what the film could have been if it were written and directed by different people.

Not as awful as I’m making it out to be, but thoroughly lacklustre given its all-star cast.
