Carry-On

OK this is embarrassing but I didn’t realise it was a Christmas film.

It’s good to see Jaume Collet-Serra back doing what he’s good at - competent tense thrillers that are a bit forgettable but undeniably quite good. I love his eye for the little details that add just a bit of extra atmosphere and tension, and the way he never eases off the pressure.

As ever you have to suspend your disbelief a little, these films always take quick breaks from reality so that the plot can make logical sense in the end. Also, the final explanation for what is actually going on is needlessly complicated and crammed into the final scenes. And to keep moaning, I don’t think Taron Egerton’s relationship with his girlfriend was that well established to make the stakes so high.

But Carry-On does pulls off what it sets out to do, and perhaps even achieves a little more than that.
