I am Martin Parr

“Try to be normal in this one.”

This stands as a pretty slideshow of Martin Parr’s photography, famous for capturing the British working classes on holiday, and briefly touches on his early black and white work which I wasn’t familiar with. However, it’s also a shameless hagiography of a man who, by this film’s own admission, attracts a lot of critique.

Who are these critics and where are they? You can’t just dangle a different perpective in front of us without exploring it at all. Having the criticism of his work explained to you by people who universally like it is an odd choice that robs the film of a much needed extra layer.

I don’t need to know what David Walliams thinks. I’d much rather hear from the people who were photographed. Again you have a bit of hypocrisy here - the film talks about Parr’s rebuttal of snobbery in photography, while also only consulting photography snobs on the subject.

But… we do get to shadow the man himself as he works, and I suppose unabashed praise is the price you pay for that level of access. It’s a way to look through the eyes of a man who sees what no one else sees.
