We’re back with the Something Strange book club here in Sheffield and it’s a film I didn’t even know was based on a book.

What fun to revisit this through a different lens, having now read the source material (er, review of the book coming soon). Some key details have changed, like the name of the character, but man it’s clear how much Tarantino loves this book. Most scenes in the film are lifted verbatim, blow by blow from the novel. I was mouthing along to what people were saying at times.

And the end result is a masterful film that tells a compelling story of complicated characters and dodgy dealings. It’s a low-key number that has aged into one of his best pieces of work, and probably his best screenplay.

A rare beast this one - the film will please lovers of the book, and the book will please lovers of the film.
