Leo

“Guys, you don’t have to be afraid of change. Change is a beautiful part of life.”

Leo the classroom lizard is 74 years old and has seen dozens of classes come and go over the years. He’s facing a crisis in his old age and decides to reveal to one of the children that he can talk and impart them with useful advice.

I guess Adam Sandler’s eternal Netflix deal has brought him round to animation now, and hats off to him I can’t imagine anyone else getting this made. It’s a kid’s musical animation about a talking lizard with old-timey songs but rich in Sandler’s signature sense of humour.

It almost touches on little moments of profundity like a Pixar film, but mostly chooses to back away and go down the silly route instead. This is annoying at times but forgiveable at others. The jokes are also very much ‘for adults’ or ‘for kids’ and that’s where you really feel the difference between Leo and more accomplished animations.

However I always give brownie points for originality and you can’t deny this is a one-of-a-kind, charmingly weird film.
