Quiz Lady

“I hate charades.”

A TV-quiz obsessed woman (Awkwafina) is secretly filmed rapid-fire answering trivia questions on her sofa, and becomes viral on the internet. Her sister (Sandra Oh) enters her into the show in a bid to try and pay off their mother’s gambling debt.

A breezy, sweet comedy that has some pacing issues and holds zero surprises in store, but works largely because of the extremely strong two leads at the middle of it. Jason Schwartzman also provides an amusingly shit-eating-grin as the know-it-all contestant who has been on the show for years on end.

This is really a family comedy-drama, and it leans heavily on that side of its story - the quiz show comes towards the third act. It’s a little frustrating at times because it feels like it never quite gets off the ground, but if you forget the central premise of the film and focus on what is actually playing out on the screen, it’s a good time.
