The Holiday

“I’ve found almost everything ever written about love to be true.”

Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz do a house swap for Christmas. Kate gets a big Hollywood pad, Cameron gets a cute cottage in the Cotswolds.

This is effectively two films in one so by rom-com standards the run time is very long, and sometimes it feels a tad over-stuffed. There’s a whole side-plot where Kate Winslet meets Eli Wallach and helps him gain the confidence to go back out in public.

And yet something about the film’s willingness to just go wherever it wants does make it quite good. The Eli Wallach stuff feels like it should be there. It just wants to be a cozy film about people gently recovering from romantic mishaps in their own ways, and it works really well. Everyone looks bloody amazing and is having fun.

A solid one to add to the Christmas movie list.
