The Outrun

It’s book club time again and this time we’ve already seen the film1 so it’s just the book we’re talking about.

Last time I spoke about how much time I’d spent on Orkney and man this memoir really brought it all back. Liptrot delves far deeper into the history and geography of the area than I was expecting, and it put be right there as a young teenager, watching Oyster Catchers, reading the Orkneyinga Saga and visiting various cairns.

It’s a wonderfully realised account of pulling through addiction and finding oneself, and one that unusually preaches for the value of connectedness out in the remoter parts of the country rather than the usual ‘digital detox’.

I liked the film adaptation and I think they nailed the vibe of the book while making something that stands as its own work. I can’t believe it’s been 12 months since I watched it though!
