These hand-drawn non-Disney animations seem to have found a new surge of popularity in recent years, that wasn’t really there on release.

You can kind of see what was overlooked at the time - there’s something that works well between Kenneth Branagh and Kevin Kline as the two leads, delivering some fun quippy and droll dialogue. The core narrative is also quite strong.

However, the final third really does start to become Elton John music videos, which hurts even more when the songs aren’t as good as The Lion King. Also, the lead female character is over-sexualised to a weird degree, in fact, the movie as a whole is super horny. That’s fun for memes but makes for a pretty confused tone.
