Bempton Cliffs and Filey

A colourful field with a tree in

I joined my parents and their friend for a couple of days over on the Yorkshire coast, they very kindly invited me for the last couple of days of their holiday. These are all from Filey and Bempton cliffs.

I don’t shoot much colour and much less Portra, but I was there to photograph birds on the cliffs so I thought I’d give it a go. Bempton is known for its wide variety of birds, and when we were there it was gannet season.

Turns out my favourites were not of birds but rather the surrounding scenery. I cannot believe how lovely the colours are with this film, I guess it’s not all hype.

A gannet

We were lucky with the light so actually, the gannets probably could have worked just as well in black and white.

I took my Pentax MX. I had ordered a 200mm lens to get the bird photos, but it got delayed so I went to Harrison’s Cameras1 who happened to have a 135mm for really cheap. Perhaps this was for the best in the end, the birds were actually quite close and it was very windy on the cliff.

But now check this out…

Bempton cliffs

These came out of the scanner looking like this with little extra work having to be done. I couldn’t quite get the picture I wanted with this coastal one but the warm vibe in it really spoke to me.

Sunflowers

These two of the trees are from the car park just outside Filey, same with the photo right at the top. I can’t explain why but they blew me away a bit, I think they managed to capture exactly why I took the picture if that makes sense? That doesn’t happen every time!

The non-bird photos were on my trusty tiny 40m ‘pancake’ lens. It’s great because when you are hauling around a bigger one in the bag, the 40mm squeezes in pretty much any pocket.

Bit of a red cast on this tractor photo but I like it. If you catch me on Postcrossing2, or Postcards from Afar3, you might well get one of these images as a postcard from me!
