Other Mommy

A girl (Arabella Olivia Clark) is targeted by some demon that tries to take over her heart by shapeshifting into her mother (Jessica Chastain). As the family realise what is happening they must rid the house of the monster.
We’re here for the Something Strange1 book club again; having read the book counterpart Incidents Around the House2 it’s time to watch the film. Which is out now in all good cinemas near you. I probably wouldn’t bother though.
I’m not a total hater like everyone else seems to be on this film, Jessica Chastain is great! And surely we all fear soft play areas with ball pits? But yeah the cons outweigh the pros for sure. Like, it forgets to actually construct a narrative. Instead it’s just flitting between a collection of ideas for scary stuff.
Turns out, when you don’t set the scene, ‘scary stuff’ just comes off as a bunch of cheap tricks and jump scares.
Somehow finds the weaknesses in the book and exploits them, while ditching the parts of the book that worked.
